The Weyburn Red Wings opened their regular season splitting
their first two games. Weyburn lost their season opening game in Yorkton by a score
of 7-5. "Our own zone coverage was not good," said Red Wing
coach Dwight McMillan. "We gave up a lot of two-on-ones.
Those gave us trouble all night." Team goals-against figures were high in the early going. "You don't score more than five goals on the road very
much," said McMillan. "If you are going to win games
on the road, you have to keep the scores down." The Wings lacked the same preparation they showed in previous
exhibition games this year. "We did not have anyone supporting the puck carrier,"
said McMillan. Weyburn went 0 for 9 on the power play, including a three-minute
two-man advantage midway through the third period. The Wings
only got two shots on Terrier relief goalie Justin Dubasov. "That three minute two-man power play was crucial,"
said McMillan. "We did not move the puck and stayed to the
outside. I told the guys that they have to get inside the defence
to score." One bright spot was the play of Sergei Sinicin, who scored
two goals, one assist and the game's second star award. Oh, what a difference a change of scenery makes. In their home opener, the Wings corrected many of the things
they did wrong from the previous outing. But not before a wake-up
call. Lebret opened the scoring, up 2-0 before the game was two
minutes old. Lebret's Wade Houle made the game 3-0 at the 10:28
mark of the first frame. Then Weyburn's offence showed up. After scoring two unanswered
goals to end the first period, they added four more in the second,
taking a 6-4 lead to the third period. Weyburn kept the lead
going when Christan Cote scored his third and fourth goals of
the game giving Weyburn a 8-4 lead. Lebret added one more, but could not get anything else going.
Weyburn collected their first win at home by a score of 8-5. Aside from Cote's four-goal night, Brian Kerr had four assists
and Jake Gradwell had three helpers. "We showed a lot more spirit tonight than we did against
Yorkton," said McMillan. Weyburn's power play scored three goals on six power plays.
This was a big improvement on the 0 for 9 performance the previous
night. McMillan also praised the play of Peter Hay. "Peter made some things happen tonight," said McMillan. The Red Wing coach said his team earned the victory. "Lebret has a hard-working team," said McMillan.
"We scored some really good goals tonight." In spite of his team's win, McMillan was not totally pleased. "We gave up an average of six goals a game in our last two games," said McMillan. "That is way too many." |
