The Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles girls volleyball team won
their home tournament this weekend. The eight team round-robin tournament started on Friday. In
the round-robin portion, the Eagles finished with a 12 -2 record.
That was good enough to win their pool and move on to the playoffs. In the semifinal, Weyburn defeated Balgonie in two straight
games, 25-14 and 25-17. The wins put Weyburn up against an old
nemesis - Yellow Grass has beaten Weyburn in the final of their
own home tournament the last couple of years. Weyburn won Set 1 of the final match by a score of 25-16.
Yellow Grass responded with a very close 25-21 set. In the rubber
set, Weyburn won the set and the match 15-12 for the gold medal. The quality of play at the tournament ranged from excellent
to mediocre, which helped the coaching staff. "Everyone got to play this tournament and that is a good
thing," said coach Blake Johnson. "I am pretty happy
with the effort my players gave this weekend." Johnson added: "When we are on a roll, we are alright." "I think we played really well," said Tamara Steer,
a Grade 11 team member. "I am proud of our team because
we did not slump." This was the team's first tournament win this season. "We did not make any little mistakes this tournament,"
said Marla May, a Grade 12 team member. "Because of the
new scoring system, every little mistake counts." Despite the tournament win, the coach said there is room for
improvement. "We need to work on our consistency," said Johnson.
"We are making mistakes because of inexperience. The most
positive thing I saw this weekend was that our rookies played
good volleyball," he said. "Even in the finals, we
had people go in to play special situations. They did well." Coach Johnson said this team can be successful at a provincial
level. "But, there is still lots of room for improvement," said the coach. |
