Ratepayers in the RMs of Brokenshell and Weyburn will discuss
and vote on the option of withholding their property taxes today. The Brokenshell meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday
in the Trossachs Community Hall. The meeting for the RM of Weyburn
is also scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Weyburn Inn. Speakers will include Craig Melvin of the Saskatchewan School
Trustees Association (SSTA), Ken Engel of the Saskatchewan Association
of Rural Municipalities (SARM), farmer Art Mainil from the RM
of Benson, farmer Barry Farr of Lewvan and Richard Truscott of
the Canadian Taxpayers Association. Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Brenda Bakken and MP Roy Bailey will
also be present at the meetings. These will be the sixth and seventh tax revolt meetings held
in southeast Saskatchewan in the past few weeks. Ratepayers in
the RM of Benson were the first and only group to reject the
idea. Votes in favour of a tax revolt have been cast in the RMs
of Wellington, Lajord, Francis and Scott. Much of the tax revolt movement is based on the argument that education tax on farm land is too high. Supporters say they cannot afford to pay the lion's share of education tax, especially in a year where farm incomes have fallen to their lowest levels since the depression. |
