Fall carnival, concerts mark Education Week

Education Week at Weyburn's schools, from Oct. 18 to 22, will be celebrated with everything from a fall carnival to concerts and open houses.

The Weyburn Junior High will turn the entire school facility into its first Fall Fest carnival event on Tuesday, Oct. 19, said vice-principal Terri Morgan, taking place from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

"There will be a barbecue and lots of different games of chance, like a carnival, a book fair, face-painting, pumpkin carving, all put on by the staff and students of Weyburn Junior High," she said. "This is the first time we've tried it, so we're very excited about it."

People attending should enter the school by the gymnasium entrance, where they can sign up for an intergenerational scavenger hunt. Tickets to all the events and activities throughout the school's hallways and classrooms can also be bought at the door, at five for $1, with most events only requiring one ticket each. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available at the barbecue.

There will be games suitable for all age ranges, from a fish pond for small children to games for the bigger kids like football toss, dunk tank and basketball free throws.

A silent auction will be on display, featuring baking and crafts donated by parents, and Kevin Lackey will auction off some items later in the evening, with all proceeds going to the parents' association.

A book fair and coffee shop will also be set up under the name Larbucks Cafe, named after Home Economics teacher Donna Larson, featuring specialty coffees and tea with dessert.

At St. Michael Junior High, the school will hold Parent Appreciation Day on Monday, Oct. 18, as the SRC and teachers will prepare and serve breakfast for parents from 7 to 9 a.m. There will be an all-day student retreat on Oct. 19 put on by Net Ministries, with mass to be celebrated at 2 p.m. in the gym.

Student Appreciation Day will be held on Oct. 20 with a pizza lunch sponsored by the Parent-Teachers Association, and a volleyball game between students and teachers will be held in the gym at 12:20 p.m.

Social Justice Day will be the theme for Friday, Oct. 22, when the school will kick off its campaign to collect 2,000 items for the Weyburn food bank by December. The goal for Friday is to collect 200 items of food. The Grade 7 class will also pledge sponsorship of a child through the Catholic Child Care Society on this day.

The Weyburn Comprehensive School will be holding a noon luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cafetorium. This is the school's regular lunch period, and it is being opened up for parents and the general public to attend. There will be examples of student work on display in the Cafetorium as well.

Queen Elizabeth School will hold its annual book fair on Wednesday, Oct. 20, and there will be a parent information night that evening from 7 to 9 p.m.

The information night will open with introductions of the director of education, superintendent of curriculum, teachers and home and school association members. Colleen Olson with the regional education office will present information on the new health curriculum, which covers HIV and AIDS, and she will take questions on the course.

At 8:15 and 8:30 p.m., parents can assemble in classrooms for an overview of the year's programs. The overview for K-4 will take place first, followed by grades 4-6.

The book fair will continue on Thursday, and on Friday there will be beach volleyball game between parents and Grade 6 students from 12:15 to 12:45; children will sing their songs being prepared for Communithon from 1:15 to 1:30 p.m. in the gym, and parents may take their children from the classroom between 1:30 and 2:20 to purchase books from the book fair.

At Assiniboia Park School, the grades 4-6 choir will present a noon concert on Oct. 19, performing numbers they will be presenting at the upcoming Communithon. A week later, also at noon, the K-3 choirs will also present their Communithon songs. Parents are invited to attend both of these concerts, to bring a blanket and lunch and eat in the gym.

A parents information night will be held on Oct. 21 starting at 7 p.m., with information to be presented on the various programs in the school, such as the Social Skills program and Violence Intervention. There will also be a performance by the Division 2 choir.

Education Week will marked at Souris School on Oct. 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., featuring the grand opening of the new solarium. In the gym, there will be a number of hands-on activities, featuring hand games, the making of a gigantic handprint mural, learning and singing hands-related songs and hands-on computer time. The evening will also be an open house for the school, and parents are invited to look around and see what's happening in the classrooms.

At Haig School, the open house evening will be held on Oct. 20 starting at 7 p.m., featuring a kickoff of the accelerated reading program for its second year. There will be information presented on the program along with a visual presentation, and parents will have the information to go into the computer lab to try the program out, said principal Guy Shupe.

A plaque will also be presented acknowledging the sponsors of the program. The evening will also feature entertainment by the school's choirs, and will be followed by the open house when parents can look around their children's classrooms.

The week's activities at St. Dominic Savio will be led off by mass on Tuesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church for all of the students, followed that evening by a parent information night and open house, starting at 7 p.m.

A book fair will be available for the students on Wednesday, and Friday will be Spirit Day, when students can dress up as whatever career they would like to pursue. There will also be a hot lunch put on by the parents' association.
