Student Speak
- Once a month, the Weyburn Review asks junior high students
to comment on a selected topic or issue. This month, students
at St. Michael and Weyburn Junior Highs were asked the following
question:
-
- "Does your school have everything it needs, such
as equipment, computers, etc. What can be done to improve your
school?
-
- I think we are fortunate to have everything we have now at
St. Michael Jr. High. We have computers, a lot of Phys.Ed. equipment,
books that are in good shape and facilities that have pretty
much everything we need. I know that there is a very tight budget
for our school, but more sports equipment that's of better quality
would be all right to have. and full-sized lockers, because the
classrooms are cluttered up with bags and jackets. I just think
everything would be neater.
- Stefanie Giroux, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- I think we should have better computers and a cafeteria.
To get these things we could do some fund-raisers and get some
donations.
- Daniell Coccimiglio, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- No, the school doesn't have everything it needs. It needs
a cafeteria, a school nurse, better gym equipment, better and
faster computers, also it needs more sponsors so we can have
more money to buy scoreboards, bleachers, magazines, etc.
- Kaylin Sidloski, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- I think my school does a good job of meeting our needs. There
are some things we could have like full lockers, a separate industrial
arts room and definitely a separate sewing and cooking lab. We
might be able to have more of these things if we had more money.
- Tiffany Gutzke, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- My school doesn't have everything it needs. We need to have
better band and home-ec supplies, such as bass drums and sewing
machines. We should widen the hallways, and we need better lockers.
We need working computers and a better word-processing program.
We need air-conditioning and heating.
- Shanna Pilon, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- Our school could use more programs and some more P.E. equipment
and programs. Some improvements that could be made are the extended
programs. Otherwise the school is very sound and extremely well-off.
- Tanner Kerowatski, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- No, I don't think that the school has everything it needs.
We could have more classrooms and more hallways. It could use
some better desks so tall people can fit in them. It would be
nice if the lockers were just one single locker instead of splitting
them into a top and bottom locker. A bigger change room with
nice showers that you can control the heat and possibly a level
field would also be good.
- Jared Mahnic, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
-
- I think our school has almost everything it needs, but we
should get new desks and new chairs for every room. I think our
gym is pretty small and we don't have enough bleachers. Our school
should have more water fountains put in and get new stands for
our music. They should put in full lockers too.
- Chantel Borys, Gr. 9
St. Michael Jr. High
I think that Weyburn Junior High is a good school, is fairly
up-to-date and a lot of excellent extracurricular activities
and programs are offered. I think that a class that teaches money-handling,
investments and saving should be mandatory. Today's youth are
not very responsible with their money, and I think that a class
such as this would be an asset to anyone.
- Michelle Brownridge, Gr. 8
Weyburn Jr. High
-
- Our school would be better if we had more teams, so that
more people could play. It would also be better if our B teams
could go to more out-of-town games. They would be able to play
people with different abilities instead of each other.
- Kristie Lund, Gr. 8
Weyburn Jr. High
-
- I think our school needs a class after school or even at
lunch for people to take extra classes in subjects they're good
at and would like to learn more in. I know I would like an extra
class for math. I also think we should have a choice in learning
French or Spanish or another language. I also think it would
be a good idea to have a school newspaper. In elementary school
we had a newspaper and I was the editor, and it was fun. I think
it would be something fun for people in our school to do. These
are just a couple ideas I had in making our school a better,
funner, more intelligent place.

- The first thing I would improve is the desks. All the room
that have stools are all right, but the rooms with the old-fashioned
wood and green metal desks have to go. Another thing I would
improve is the computer lab. It is all right, it just needs more
computers because I'm always sharing. The students who are alone
get done way faster. One more thing I would improve are the chalkboards.
I say we change all the green boards into those new white boards;
they are so much better. For one thing they use markers and not
chalk that gets all over your hands. Also to improve I would
get one more copier in the office because the teachers always
say the copier is broken and we have to write notes. The last
thing I would change is the gym: I would get more balls also
I would get better mats, because they are so hard and are getting
dirty.
- Kylie McDonald, Gr. 8
Weyburn Jr. High
-
- What I like most about the school are all the new people
you meet. It takes a little getting used to, but you catch on
after awhile. I like all the new teachers, and I like going by
the Home Ec room, because it always smells so good. There's lots
of things I like about my school.
- Carole Bestvater, Gr. 7
Weyburn Jr. High
-
- I think our school should offer a couple of trips for the
people that choose art instead of band. The grade 8 and 9 bands
get to go on band trips to play, so I think the Gr. 8 and Gr.
9 art students should get to go on trips to see art galleries.
That's what I think would improve our school.
