Youth Centre raises money for programs, needs volunteers

The Weyburn Youth Centre reopened its doors on Sept. 22.

The centre began the season by staying open one night per week, because of volunteer availability. The centre also advertises a Loonie Swim Night" at the Weyburn Leisure Centre for grades 7 to 12.

As of Oct. 18, the centre will be open two nights per week. Anyone who is interested in volunteering at the centre who loves children can pick up a volunteer application. For the centre to be open, a minimum of three volunteers are required, to ensure safe, wholesome and fun interaction among teens.

Coming up in the near future is the Weyburn Youth Centre annual "report to the people" benefit banquet. This event takes place on Monday, Nov. 1 and Tuesday, Nov. 2. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Dinner is served at 7 p.m., with a program to follow. Tables of eight are sold for $100, individual tickets are being sold for $12.50. Table sponsors will be issued a tax receipt. The banquet gives the centre an opportunity to inform the public of youth centre activities.

Mike Szabo, who specializes in Christian counselling in Weyburn, will be the guest speaker at the banquet.

The Weyburn Youth Centre is raising money to cover their annual operating and programming costs for local children.

"We do not have any paid staff, nor do we pay salaries to anyone," said Lackey.

Youth Centre administrators will also inform the public of their activities for the upcoming year.

The centre now has a new interim-director. Ruth Brown has assumed those duties while the centre searches for a permanent director.

The Weyburn Youth Centre is a part of a world-wide youth organization known as Youth for Christ. One it its founding members was evangelist Billy Graham. The organization has since grown to 3,280 full-time staff and 25,000 volunteers in 123 countries.

Youth for Christ is an interdenominational organization that relies entirely on donations to run its activities. The Weyburn Youth Centre uses all donations locally.

All staff are required to raise their own wages through donations given personally to them. The centre asks the public to join their work by contributing prayer, time, energy and money as the public is able.
