Fighting wind and fire

A crew of firefighters sprays down a fire in a field west of Yellow Grass late Sunday night, in a blaze that lasted over nine hours and spread over 15 miles. The huge grass fire, one of several in the southeast area, began with a burning barrel on a farm north of Khedive, and was whipped up by winds gusting over 95 kilometres an hour. It took the crews from six fire departments and workers in graders, water trucks and earth-moving equipment, along with some snow, to finally put the blaze out.

Communithon raises close to $94,000

Weyburn and District United Way Communithon co-chairmen Jerry Ponto and Don Kraft, along with Brent Allin of Cable Weyburn, volunteer Reinhard Eisbrenner and event mascots Captain United (Richard Roy) and Lady Charity (Michelle Pilon) applaud the efforts of organizers, volunteers, and those who pledged money at the end of Communithon, Saturday afternoon. The 33-hour telethon, broadcast live over Cable Weyburn, raised close to $94,000 for the 17 member agencies of the local United Way when all the donations were added up.
