Chris Baillie

"We're having a blast!"

That's how 17-year-old Chris Baillie describes this year's WCS boys' volleyball season.

A three-year veteran of the squad, Baillie says the team has won two silver medals, one bronze, and one gold at tournaments so far this year.

Although volleyball practice takes up much of his time, Baillie still manages to help out as an assistant coach for his former team, the Weyburn Junior High Cobras.

He says his love of sports is not a recent acquisition.

"I've played sports ever since I was a kid." When he was younger he was involved in baseball and hockey and didn't start school sports until he was in Grade 5.

Baillie was attracted to volleyball because of the "competitiveness and hard work involved."

Curling, he says, was another matter. The Grade 12 student took up the sport in Grade 6 as a way to meet people; but says both highlights of his athletic career to date stem from volleyball. When Baillie was in his second year with the Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles' volleyball squad, they won districts for the first time since he's been part of the team.

His other memorable event occurred when he was a member of the Weyburn Junior High Cobras. The team defeated Swift Current in the gold final at Weyburn's home tournament after losing to Swift Current in the gold final game of their tournament.

Baillie plans to go to college in either Medicine Hat or Camrose after graduation this June and says he will stick with volleyball for sure. He says he'd also like to get back into recreational hockey and baseball again if his schedule permits.
