Drug Awareness speaker for parents at Comp Cafetorium

There will be a public presentation tonight, Nov. 17, by Val Anderson at the Weyburn Comprehensive School Cafetorium as part of Drug Awareness Week.

The presentation, which is for parents and other interested adults, begins at 7 p.m. The presenter, who works with the PRIDE organization in Regina, will be speaking about the drug situation in Saskatchewan.

There are other speakers being brought to city schools as part of Drug Awareness Week, including a recovering alcoholic, who will speak to Comp students earlier in the day.

The Comp had a relatively good turnout of parents for the annual parent-teacher interviews on Monday.

Both the girls and boys volleyball teams qualified to go to the SHSAA provincials, with victories last week over Estevan. The boys will go on to Swift Current on Friday, while the girls will travel to Meadow Lake for their finals. The biggest hurdle for the boys team will be the hometown Swift Current Ardens, who have won all sets between the teams in a number of tournaments this season.

With volleyball season over for most players after this weekend, basketball will start up next week. Gary Frederickson and Wanda Pegg, the two senior coaches, have their schedules all set, and all interested players are invited to the tryouts.

The Weyburn Red Wings are holding a Sweet Adelines concert on Saturday, Nov. 20 in the Cafetorium. The production, entitled, The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, will feature former Review editor Ed Willett as a guest performer, with music and entertainment from the Second World War. The show gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

The Comp will host a debate tournament on Friday, Nov. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. Judges are still needed for the tournament; if anyone would be interested in helping out, please contact Glenda Shupe at the school.

The annual Comp Fowl Supper will be held on Monday, Nov. 29, with a meal and entertainment offered from 5 to 7 p.m. Hundreds of volunteers, including students, parents, staff and members of the community, will pitch in for this fund-raising event.
