The T.C. Douglas Calvary Centre for the Performing Arts elected new board officers at their annual meeting held on Nov. 23 and revealed the annual operating costs have exceeded rental revenues for the last four years. The new officers for the centre are chairman Ron Wormsbecker, secretary Kim Wheeler and treasurer Al Yeaman. Financial reports were also reviewed by Al Yeaman who reported the centre has been kept open through monetary gifts from donors. As donations have been declining, the T.C. Douglas operating board have drawn on capital reserves to meet its projected $1,100 loss in 1999. As rental rates have not increased in six years, a committee was stuck to review whether rates need to be changed or to find other ways to utilize the centre. To raise money for its annual operating costs, a Valentine's Benefit and Social; will be held on February 13. Weyburn and area artists and performers will provide variety entertainment in two performances starting at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The T.C. Douglas Centre is a historical building retaining its clapboard church exterior appearance. The upper level has a stage and pew-seating capacity for 140 people. An adjoining room displays memorabilia from the Tommy Douglas era. The lower level has kitchen facilities and dines up to 60 people. Both upper levels and lower levels can be used for public meetings. The principal users of the centre are, the Variations and Octavius singing groups, Crocus 80 Theatre, the Wheat Festival Summer Theatre, Weyburn Faith Family Church, Music Teachers, and the Weyburn Music Festival. |
