Weyburn Comprehensive School student Becky Borshowa keeps busy juggling her schoolwork with her two favourite sports - soccer and hockey. The 16-year-old has lived in Weyburn all her life. She gets her soccer fix by playing with the under-17 youth league, the WCS Eagles, and the adult recreational league. Borshowa is a halfback on the Eagles soccer team but says she plays the fullback position on the other teams. The Eagles soccer team lost in districts this year but Borshowa says she had an enjoyable season. When the snow starts falling and soccer comes to an end, Borshowa plays hockey on a Bantam/Midget mixed girls' team. She explains that there are not enough female players to make a full team of either age group. "If players want to play, they have to play down because there are no midget girls' teams." When asked what her most memorable moment in sports has been, Borshowa replies: "Last year's hockey. We ended first in the league, but lost in the playoffs," she says with a sigh. Borshowa's team is part of a Regina league. Each team is guaranteed 22 games and this year there are eight teams in the league. The number of hours she devotes to games and practices "depends on the season." She remarks that she's most busy during January and February when her hockey team is trying to cram in the rest of their league games. They are also having tournaments and anticipating provincials. Borshowa says that any team in Saskatchewan can register for provincials and all the teams are whittled down to two in a weekend of round-robin and playoff action. The two teams then duke it out for the provincial title. And as for this winter, what does Becky anticipate for her hockey team? "A long, hard season." |
