Connie Kaldor to headline

Homecoming 2000 event planned to coincide with Weyburn Wheat Festival

Plans for the Weyburn Wheat Festival next August will include a Homecoming 2000 event organized by a committee of residents, and will feature singer Connie Kaldor at the festival concert.

The Wheat Festival will be held on the weekend of Aug. 11-13 at the exhibition grounds, with many of the activities and features of past Wheat Festivals kept as attractions.

A change from prior years will be to have headline entertainer Connie Kaldor perform at the festival concert. Previously this concert has featured performances from the community in a variety concert; local performers will be able to bring their presentations to an outdoor stage, weather permitting, which will be available throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday.

The homecoming, meanwhile, is being planned by a committee of Weyburn residents who wanted to hold it in conjunction with the Wheat Festival, so those attending will have all of the related activities to take in, said organizer Hazeldene Evans.

"What we're trying to do is combine it with the Wheat Festival, but to start registration on the Thursday. We're just getting started, so if anyone has anybody they would like contacted, they can let us know," she said.

The committee's other members include Isabelle Butters, Ron Metheral, Berty McKenzie and Audrey Bennett. Further meetings are planned for January and February to start the ball rolling on organizing the event.

"If we can get people talking about it then we'll be sure to have a big event. We know we'll have a lot of people out, it's going to be a matter of getting the word out so more people will know about it," said Evans. For information, or to pass along names, call Evans, Isabelle Butters or Berty McKenzie.

A threshing bee and stooking contest with antique farm equipment will be held at the Wheat Festival, along with a pancake breakfast, barbecue, craft show and sale, bread-baking contest, and games and activities galore in the children's activity centre, located in the McFadden Building.

The Weyburn Horticulture Society will again hold their annual Horticulture Show in conjunction with the Wheat Festival, and the ministerial association will organize the community worship service on the Sunday morning. A summer theatre production is also planned to be held at T.C. Douglas Calvary Centre during that week.

A golf tournament will be held in conjunction with the festival, there will be educational displays about the agricultural industry, and tours will be held of farm and grain-handling facilities.
