1-2 on northern swing

Wings steal play against Broncs

The Red Wings went out into the blizzard like viking warriors in the hopes of returning home with the spoils of victory and three road-wins.

"It was tough travelling in that weather," said Red Wing coach Dwight McMillan. "There was often no visibility."

But the trip's lone win was Sunday's game against the Humboldt Broncos. After talking a 2-0 lead in the first period, they held on for a 3-1 win.

"We just told the guys to go out and play hockey," McMillan said. "We played an outstanding game."

Mike Weisgerber had a three-point night, with a goal and two assists. Peter Hay scored the Red Wing's final goal of the century and also had two assists.

In the final 15 second of the game, four Broncos dropped the gloves in four seperate fights against their Red Wing opponents.

"Every time someone wanted to fight, we accommodated them," said McMillan. "We won't run away from a fight. They were frustrated that we out played them the whole game."

In the previous night's game in Kindersley, McMillan said his team put a lot of pressure on themselves to win all three games on the road - so much so that they had difficulty scoring.

We "should have taken the pressure off the guys," said McMillan. "They wanted to win in the worst way."

The Red Wings started the game off, when Brian Kerr scored the Wing's lone goal 98 seconds into the game, and the winged warriors led 2-1 at the halfway point of the game. But three Kindersley goals in the third period iced the Klipper's 4-2 win.

On Friday, the Red Wings reunited with last week's opponent, the North Battleford North Stars.

"Because we wanted to go into the break with three-straight wins, our offence missed a lot of opportunities to win the game," said McMillan. "We could have won the game in North Battleford."

After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings David Lapierre scored the game's first goal just over two minutes into the second period. The North Stars then went on a scoring rampage, scoring three goals in under three minutes taking a 3-1 lead. The North Stars extended their lead midway through the third to complete the scoring in their 4-1 win.

Throughout the road trip, the Red Wings suffered through injuries. The team only brought 20 players, picking up three associate players from midget teams en route to North Battleford.

Jeff Taylor strained his shoulder. Kris Currie, James Douglas and Ryan Rome were also not on the roster because of injuries., while Christian Cote has been suspended from play.

"Other kids were playing while banged up," said McMillan.

For that reason, the Christmas break could not have come at a better time.

Sergei Sinicin decided not to play in the Viking Cup over the Christmas break. Instead, he will join his teammates in resting up for the second half.

"I think we are in good shape for the second half of the year," said McMillan. "In our last 16 games, we went 10-4-2. That's better than Melville's record since Nov. 1."

McMillan will now rest up for the second half, just like his team.
