Family festival to ring in 2000 with fireworks

The first-ever community-wide festival to bring in the new year, the Millennium Family Fest, will be held at the Weyburn Comprehensive School on Friday, Dec. 31.

The evening is planned as a non-alcohol family event starting at 8:30 p.m., including games, a dance and food, ending with a short fireworks display at midnight to bring in the year 2000.

The event is being jointly organized by the Weyburn Performing Arts Centre Society and Weyburn Tourism, with assistance from organizations, in particular Weyburn KidSport, businesses and schools in Weyburn. The proceeds from the event will go to the Performing Arts Centre Society.

Many games will be set up for children in the gymnasium, and a number of rooms will be in use for various other activities. There will be a movie room, card room, entertainment room, face-painting, crafts, a video games room, a cafe with coffee, hot chocolate and hot dogs available, a fish pond, a silent auction, popcorn and candy floss, a quiet room, a dance and a bonfire. Anyone wishing to donate items to the silent auction can bring them that night.

The organizing committee is still seeking volunteers to lend a hand for part or all of the evening's event. Those interested can contact Bob King or Donna Hastings at City Hall.

All activities and food are accessible by a hand stamp or tickets, which are obtained at the entrance to the school for the event. Tickets are priced at five for $1, or a hand stamp is available for $7 which will give the person unlimited access to all games, plus a hot dog and hot chocolate.

To enter the school for the event, the public is asked to use the gymnasium doors on the west side, or the A doors to the Cafetorium on the southeast corner of the new part of the school.
