A number of incidents from late December and early January remain under investigation by the Weyburn Police Service and Weyburn RCMP, including a number of thefts and break-ins. An elderly woman had her purse stolen on Dec. 18 as she was walking with another woman on Bison Avenue. Police report the unknown culprit was walking towards them and began to run as he approached them, and grabbed the purse of one of the women. The thief ran westward towards the Colosseum, and has the following description: he was about six- to six-foot-two in height with a thin build, and was wearing dark clothing. He covered his face with his collar. City police are also investigating the break-in to Stagecoach Tours on Dec. 19, when a number of tools and other articles were stolen, followed the same night by a break-in to the Weyburn Legion Hall. Police believe the tools stolen from Stagecoach were used in the Legion break-in, where cash was stolen from VLT machines along with cigarettes. Bent's Smoke Shop in the Weyburn Square Mall was broken into on Boxing Day, with a large quantity of cigarettes and some cash stolen. Since the first report of this incident, a witness has reported that a short-box red half-ton pickup was backed up to the mall doors. A Midale business, the Midway Cafe and Devil's Pit Bar, was also broken into on Boxing Day sometime between 1 and 6 a.m., with cash and cigarettes stolen. On Jan. 4, a customer left her purse in her shopping cart while loading groceries into her vehicle in the parking lot of the Co-op grocery store. When she returned to the cart the purse was gone; the black purse was later recovered on 16th Street, with a quantity of cash missing. The RCMP are also investigating two reports of suspicious vehicles in the area. The first report came on Christmas Day, as a pickup truck was seen driving into several farm yards west of Weyburn. A similar vehicle was seen in the Yellow Grass district that day as well. A truck was driving around North Weyburn on Dec. 27 around 10 p.m. disturbing residents, and fled. If anyone has information on any of these incidents, they are asked to call the city police, RCMP or the toll-free Crime Stoppers tips line at 1-800-667-8477. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,000 in cash for information which leads to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this offence. |
