Weyburn Homecoming 2000 needs volunteers to help out

Plans are coming together for Weyburn Homecoming 2000 this summer, with a number of committees formed and volunteers needed to help organize the event.

The core organizing committee has been putting together plans to hold the homecoming in conjunction with the Weyburn Wheat Festival, to be held the weekend of Aug. 11-13, 2000, at the exhibition grounds.

Besides lining up the volunteers needed for the committees, organizers are trying to contact as many former residents as they can, including contacting people from the various graduating classes or those who attended the last homecoming held in 1988, said organizer Hazeldene Evans.

The effort to contact people will include putting the word out through cable television community bulletins across Canada.

"It's going to take a big effort on the part of the citizens of Weyburn. We'd like to get younger people involved too," said Evans.

Some of the committees needing volunteers include registration, which would be in charge of homecoming registrations at Weyburn Square Mall on the Thursday and Friday; the dance committee, which would include people in charge of transporting tables, the liquor licence and bar attendants, ticket sales for the bar, and crowd control at the entrance; decorations committee, which would do up the Colosseum on the Saturday, and the Comp on Sunday; and the committee in charge of the dinner and social on the Sunday night, including lining up the decorations, entertainment and catering.

The second meeting was held on Jan. 11, and the next meeting for the homecoming committee will be on Leap Day, Feb. 29.
