Through its two wins on Wednesday, the Weyburn Comprehensive School gained a 21-point advantage against Estevan in the 2000 McLeod Series. The annual basketball challenge series between the Estevan and Weyburn high schools is decided not on the number of wins each team has, but on the total scores of all games played. The women took to the court first where Weyburn won 69-56. Unforced turnovers were a factor for both teams throughout the game. "The thing that worked the best for us is Estevan did not shoot the ball very well tonight," said the Eagle's girls coach Gary Frederickson. "I don't know why that is. Perhaps they were rushed a bit, but they killed us from the free throw line." Players from both teams were feeling the pressure of playing in the historic series. "Right away, you feel a lot of pressure and adrenaline," said Eagle small forward Trina Delanoy. "We had troubles consistent, but once we slowed down, we played our game, not theirs." Weyburn tried out its fast breaking offence with mixed success. A number of the unforced turnovers came when long pass attempts missed their intended and wide-open targets. "We really have to think to prevent sloppiness there," Frederickson said. "Our fast break worked for the most part, but if we rush, our old habits come back." While Weyburn is happy to have the win, they were not happy with their defensive play. "We did not move our feet on defence, and because of that, we took a lot of fouls," said Frederickson. "They were beating us one-on-one." Later that evening, the boys took the court for the final game of the night. The Eagles took an early 6-0 lead and never trailed through the entire game, earning them a 59-51 win over their Estevan rivals. Both teams had success in causing turnovers near the centre line, as well as blocking shots. But neither team had a lot of success in finishing their scoring chances under the basket, or rebounding. "The most positive thing we can say about this game is that we won," said boys coach Wanda Pegg. "That was the poorest they've played all year." The top scorer for the Eagles was Cedric Wilson with 18 points. Devin Stein also contributed 13 rebounds and eight points. "The next game we will be more mentally prepared," said Pegg. "The team expected a cakewalk after our strong showing in Estevan. The close result tells us why we have to be intense in practice and never assume a win." The Eagles will also be working on improving their inside scoring. Pegg said there were times the guards would pass the ball to the inside post players who would then pass the ball back to the perimeter players, instead of shooting the ball. "Plan B worked tonight, but we will be practising the original plan this week," said Pegg. |
