The Weyburn Community Band is looking to build up its membership, and president Ken LeBlanc says musicians of all skill levels and ages are welcome. "We certainly have a good time at our practices. There's no such thing as being a bad player, there are all levels of us there. I didn't learn to play until I was 35," said LeBlanc, who plays the trumpet. The Community Band membership started off strong with 36 members, but participation began to wane, falling to about 10 members. Those numbers are starting to gain again at 16 musicians, playing everything from trumpet, saxophone, tuba and clarinet, to keyboards and rhythm and base guitar. The band practises once a week, Monday nights beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Comp, and perform at about half a dozen events per year with a wind-up at the end of March. They're inactive during the spring and summer, partly because of members who are involved in farming. LeBlanc says there is little cost in becoming involved in the band. "Everyone is certainly welcome to come out. We don't have any membership fees," he said, thanks to the support of the Weyburn Lions Club, which funded the initial start-up of the Community Band, helped them with fund-raising and provided other funds. "They've been more than generous," said LeBlanc. The Weyburn Community Band will perform Feb. 26 at an evening concert in Arcola, March 2 at a fund-raiser for the South East Health District in Estevan, and possibly March 25 at the Wheatland Senior Centre. |
