Once a month the Weyburn Review asks junior high students in Weyburn for their opinion on a given topic or issue. This month we asked students at St. Michael Junior High and Weyburn Junior High the following question:
"Do you think drug abuse is a problem in Weyburn? If so, what suggestions do you have to curb the problem? If not, explain also."
I think drug abuse is a problem in Weyburn because there are
too many people in Weyburn that smoke and do drugs. Some suggestions
I have that you can try to stop the drugs and the smoking is to
track the people down that are under age and make them go to court
to get probation.
- Paige Sabados, Gr. 7
St. Michael Junior High
No, I don't think drug abuse is a problem because you don't
see people all over doing drugs. Also there aren't drug dealers
all over the place. I think drugs are in Weyburn but I don't think
it is a major problem.
- Travis McLeod, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
Yes, I think drug abuse is a problem in Weyburn. Some suggestions
to curbing this problem I have are that they could have more speakers
in school. Weyburn could have a place for people that can admit
they have a problem and want help.
- Joe Broccolo, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
No I don't think it is a problem in Weyburn, because I don't
know many people that use drugs and I think it is more in Regina
and other large cities. There might be more people into alcohol
and smoking, which is a problem in Weyburn.
- Evan Kimber, Gr. 8

I do think that it is a problem because every once in a while
you hear about people getting arrested or kids coming to school
high. Drugs are not good for anyone but especially children. I
am not really sure how you could stop the problem. We have presentations
about what drugs can do to you and also we, as kids, know about
the repercussions, so I don't know what else we can do.
- Ryan Buchanan, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
Yes, I do think that drug abuse is a problem in Weyburn. A
suggestion I have for fixing this problem is that the parents
should talk to their children and teens. This could help them
reject drugs when offered or at least make them realize how bad
it is and make them stop (if they are using drugs).
- Jillian Bernard, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
Yes, I kind of think there might be a little problem with drug
abuse, like with alcohol and smoking especially, because those
are the main drugs and some people think it is enjoyable and eases
their stress. A suggestion I have to curb the problem is for more
activities for people to get involved in so they aren't doing
drugs.
- Kayla Rieger, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
No, I don't think drug abuse is a problem in Weyburn. This
city is a very safe city to be in with not a lot of crime and
things like drug abuse around. Although I don't think drug abuse
is a problem, we could also help the ones who are abusing drugs
by forming a group somewhere in Weyburn where they could come
to get help, or just have someone to talk to.
- Jenna Knox, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
Yes, I do think drug abuse is a problem. Many young and old
teens do drugs. I think there should be more police at Red Wings
games, because lots of it happens around the rink. Many young
teens are trying them because of peer pressure. There should be
a big punishment when you get caught. We as a community should
find the source of the problem, who's giving these young teens
drugs. We can do it!
- Vicky Schultz, Gr. 8

If you are caught with drugs, we should increase the penalty
against teens, so they wouldn't think of doing drugs again. This
affects everyone in our community. Don't be so light on the teens.
If they figure you're adult enough to use drugs, then you're old
enough to face adult consequences.
- Rachelle Kvamme, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
I think that we should not give kids chances; if they did the
crime, they should pay the time, not just them go with community
service.
- Jamie Aspinall, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
I think you can stop drug abuse amongst teenagers if the drugs
are harder to get and also if the punishment is harder than what
it is now.
- Mandy Borshowa, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
I think this is an important issue because teens in this world
today drink, smoke, buy drugs more than adults do. Today the percentage
of teens that die from drugs and alcohol is higher than the number
of people who die from smoking every day. So we can try to stop
this by making store laws that say you can only buy alcohol or
cigarettes if you are over the age of 25. Now in my opinion that
is a decent age to sell this stuff to. So if you are in a group
and your peers start doing drugs, tell them the things that would
happen to them if they keep drinking or smoking it.
