Annual ice fishing derby February 20

The Elks Hall will be the scene of tales of the one that got away on Sunday, Feb. 20.

That's the date the Weyburn Wildlife Federation has scheduled for their annual ice fishing derby. This year, fishing will take place on the Souris River, near the old city water intake plant near the Weyburn Golf Club.

For an entry fee of $40, participants can fish for a an estimated $1,000 grand prize. The winner will be determined by the weight of all fish caught by that person.

Preregistration will be held at the Elks Hall from 9 a.m. to 11. a.m. Fishing is scheduled to begin at noon and will last to 3 p.m. When time expires, the fishermen will return to the Elks Hall for official weigh-ins and awards presentation. A social gathering will take place following the presentations.

All participants need to take part in the derby is a valid Saskatchewan fishing licence, fishing equipment and bait. The holes will be drilled for the participants before the event begins. No shacks will be allowed for the derby.
