Issues on tobacco use to be focus at Comp next week

The issues and views surrounding tobacco use will be the focus at Weyburn Comprehensive School on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 14 and 15.

Monday will be Tobacco Awareness Day, during which WCS staff will reinforce the idea of students making wise decisions regarding their lifestyle choices.

On Tuesday morning the provincial government's all-party Special Committee on Tobacco Control will meet with Comp and junior high students to gather their views about tobacco legislation and enforcement of tobacco laws. The all-party committee, gathering views across the province, will meet with the students at 9 a.m. in the Cafetorium.

Although organizers had hoped for higher numbers, the first-ever Girls Night Out evening was attended by around 50 people. There were information sessions on healthy living, communication and other topics as they relate to mothers and daughters. The evening was well-received by those in attendance.

A small crowd was also at the Parents' Conference on Saturday. Organizers are working on a plan to increase participation in this ongoing attempt to build communication between the home and school.

The McLeod Series will conclude in Estevan tonight, Feb. 9, and this coming weekend all four Comp basketball teams will be on the road. The senior girls are off to Lake Lenore, the senior boys will be in Yorkton and the two junior teams will be at a tournament in Estevan.

Over the weekend the senior girls, junior boys and junior girls all had second-place finishes at three basketball tournaments.

The senior girls were in a 16-team tournament in Balgonie and Lumsden. After winning their first three games they lost to Wynyard in the final.

The junior girls were down the road in Wolseley, where they won their first two games and then lost to the host team in the championship game.

The Comp hosted a four-team round-robin for the junior boys, who lost in the third game to Moose Jaw Peacock by six points.

All three WCS curling teams will be participating in the Southeast District playdowns in Estevan on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 14 and 15.

Grad photos will be taken next week, and the school will host a dance on Friday, Feb. 11.

Weyburn band Another Wave will play in a concert as part of the Flatland Music Series tonight, Feb. 9, at the Comp starting at 7:30 p.m.
