The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles boys basketball team returned home to roost at the Comp gym and host their annual basketball tournament this past weekend. With their 2-1 record, the Eagles claimed second place. The Eagles started the tournament off on Friday with a 67-52 win over Regina's Thom High School. Former Weyburn Junior High School coach Bob Berenger, who now coaches at Thom, was on the bench against some of his former players. "It was an enjoyable game for him and the players because he got to see players he worked with improve a lot," said coach Wanda Pegg. D.J. Gall shot 5-6 from beyond the three-point arc and scored 19 points overall. "We got some excellent play out of all our younger players," said Pegg. "Cole Labbee and Travis Bernard also played very well." Players on both teams played the game at a slower tempo, playing mainly half court sets. "We did not press them at all, and the score wasn't really that close," said Pegg. With the format of the tournament switching to a round robin after teams played their first game, Weyburn was sent to the championship pool with their win. That set up a game against the Caronport Cougars. In their 88-53 loss, Weyburn played aggressively in the first half. "We shot well and the game was close in the first half," said Pegg. But after taking a 41-40 lead into the half, Weyburn was unable to shut down Caronport's star player Jerry Wolverton. The Cougar scored 27 points overall. Weyburn responded by shooting 6-33 from the field, scoring 17 points for the half. "Wolverton did everything for them," said Pegg. "When it was close, he took over the game. I didn't have any qualms telling our players Wolverton did his job." The Eagles then played Swift Current, beating them 79-42, in a game important for various reasons. One is that the Eagles want to establish they can beat Swift Current after losing to them in overtime in the Yorkton tournament final last weekend. Also, this game would have ramifications for the seedings at the Small Cities Championships. Weyburn will be hosting the Small Cities Championships from Friday March 10 to Saturday March 11 at the Comp gym. "We scored with everything in this game," said Pegg. Weyburn's three-point shooting improved to over 50 per cent in their final game. When Swift Current tried to keep up with Weyburn from behind the arc, they found they did not have their shooting touch required of them on that day. The Eagle win means Weyburn finished behind first-place Caronport and ahead of third-place Estevan. The team now has a week off from play. From Friday, March 3 to Saturday March 4, the Eagles will be in Swift Current for a tournament. |
