Johner Bros. to perform

55+ Summer Games sets tentative budget

Plans for the Saskatchewan 55 Plus Summer Games, which Weyburn will host from Sunday, July 16, to Wednesday, July 19, are moving forward, said committee treasurer Stan Runne.

Runne confirmed the tentative budget for the games has been set at approximately $88,000.

To help offset the expense to the host committee, the organizers are now preparing an application for a municipal government grant.

Ceremonies committee chairwoman Marlene Nedelcov confirmed the Johner Brothers agreed to perform at the opening ceremonies on Sunday, July 16.

Those who want to be a participant in any one of the 22 events at the provincial games needs to participate in the district playdowns, normally held in May.

Approximately 900 athletes and participants are expected to take part in the games' 22 events. Lawn bowling will take place in Regina because there is no facility in Weyburn.

The events will include: five-pin bowling, contract bridge, carpet bowling, cribbage, dance, darts, floor curling, golf, horseshoes, kaiser. lawn bowling, military whist, orienteering, poetry or short story writing, Scrabble, shuffleboard, slow-pitch, snooker, swimming, tennis and track and field. Cycling will also be a demonstration event at these games.

About 200 volunteers are also needed for various tasks, such as setting up and tearing down venues, cleaning up sites and moving equipment. Scorekeepers and results tabulators may also be required.

If you want to volunteer or want more details about volunteering for the event, contact Lynn Johnston at the Wheatland Seniors Centre on weekday mornings.
