The Weyburn Legion Atom Royals claimed the South Saskatchewan Atom AA League championship over the Midale Sabres in front of 350 fans at the Colosseum on Sunday. In the final total-point series of the playoffs, the Royals out-scored the Sabres 13-3. Sunday's game ended in a 4-1 win for Weyburn. Weyburn's Brendon Sobchuk opened the scoring with two minutes left in the period, assisted by Preston Shupe to take a 1-0 lead. By the end of the second period, Midale tied the score at one. Logan Pyett scored the first of his two goals six minutes into the final period, assisted by Derek Stainbrook. Later that period, Pyett scored his second of the game. Other assists came from Dereck Wilson, Lance Prost and Sobchuk. Tanner Erickson faced 17 shots in the Weyburn goal. In the first game of the series in Midale on Saturday, 19 penalties were called in Weyburn's 9-2 win. Shupe opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the game's 10th minute. By period's end, the Royals had opened up a 4-0 lead. Weyburn added to its lead, ending the second period with an 8-1 advantage. Goal scorers were, Tyler Penny with two, Wilson with two, Sobchuk with two, Cody Cossar and Josh Benloulou. Assists went to Jason Byrnes, Shupe (three), Wilson, Cossar, Pyett and Penny. Brent Ruckaber stopped 23 shots in goal for the win. The Legion Royals ended their regular season with a 15-1 record, and played the Estevan Bruins in their opening round. On Thursday, the Royals went to Estevan to play the first round of the first game of the home-and-home series. Weyburn returned home with a 5-4 win, on Sobchuk's game-winning goal with three minutes remaining in the game. Shupe assisted Sobchuk's goal. Other goal scorers were Prost, Wilson, Pyett and Penny. Assists came from Sterling LaBatte, Byrnes, Sobchuk (two), Pyett. Goalie Tanner Erickson was solid in net, facing 23 shots. In the return match on Wednesday in Weyburn, the Royals took a 11-3 win. In their offensive efforts, the Royals outshot Estevan 52-18. The Royals opened the scoring two minutes into the game and led 6-0 at the first intermission. Goals scorers were Sobchuk, Shupe, Wilson, Pyett, Prost and Mackenzie Sanders. Weyburn expanded their lead to 10-2 after the second period. Second period goal scorers were Cossar, Prost, Sobchuk and Nick Zielke. Pyett scored the game-winning goal on an end-to-end rush. Sobchuk added his third goal of the game in the third period. Assists went to Evan Schultz, Chris Borgen, Michael Ehman, Wilson (three), Prost (two), Pyett (two), Penny (two), Shupe, Sobchuk and Zielke. Brent Ruckaber tended Weyburn's goal, facing 18 shots. The Royals will be participating in a tournament in Melville this coming weekend. |
