February is quiet month for area sales

A quick poll of Weyburn goods and services providers indicate an average or low average month in terms of sales. Most businesses reported relatively natural fluctuations reflecting the nature of their trade.

Business at the Fabric Centre was slow at first, according to manager Lois Hawryluk. "It picked up near the end of the month. January was much busier, which was great. I don't know why, but February was pretty quiet for the first two weeks," she said.

Clarence Maurer of Maurer's Meats said that the month was pretty much the same as last year in terms of sales. He attributes the stability to the support of regular customers, bolstered with the addition of some new clients.

Jack Jones of Pharmasave reported a very quiet February when compared to last year. "February was not a good month for sales. The economy has declined substantially from last year, which was exceptionally good for us. However, we're not down so much when the numbers are compared to 1997-98," he said.

Vic Messer of Suds City Mini Mart stated that February sales were about average. Don Kraft, manager of Weyburn Co-op, found that sales were equivalent to those of last year, making it an average month for the business.

Businesses that depend upon seasonal revenue quoted a fairly routine February. Gene Minard of Minard Equipment said that sales were down in certain areas, but average overall for the business. "Parts sales are down because of the winter we're having. The nicer weather does affect the economy. Overall, it's not that different than last February. This is a season-driven town, and we look forward to the spring and fall," said Minard.

"Things were fairly slow in February, but this is normal," said Loni Hoium of Hoium's MVP Sports. "The hockey business is winding down and it's early for the golf, biking and ball seasons. This is an in-between time for us."
