Student Speak

The Weyburn Review asks junior high students to comment on an issue or a question once a month. This month, we asked students at Weyburn Junior High the following question:

"Do extra-curricular activities and after-school jobs keep kids too busy today? What suggestions do you have to change or improve this situation?"

I think that extra-curricular activities and after-school jobs are great. Keeping kids busy seems to keep them out of trouble. I think kids should be involved in activities after school because it will give them something to do and keep them entertained. I don't think there should be limits in what or how many activities we should be in because I personally like doing lots of activities at a time and would hate to have a limit. I think that every kid should be in at least one after-school activity to keep them fit and out of trouble. After-school activities do take up a lot of weekends. It would be nice to have a little more time off, but it's not that big a deal.

I feel that extra-curricular activities are the kids' and parents' decisions. If the child is being overworked, he or she will know it and need to make a choice whether or not to stay in their activity.
- Jeff May, Gr. 9, Weyburn Jr. High
Extra-curricular activities definitely keep kids busy. Too busy? I don't think so. I know some kids who have some activities every day. It keeps them busy but it doesn't make them too busy. Kids should be allowed to try whatever they want. Extra-curricular activities keep kids away from the TV and gets them outside.

I think that extra-curricular activities do take up too many weekends, that may put a halt on some students' social life. Otherwise, on week-days, I feel that sports don't take up too much time. I think to help we could try to reduce the amount of weekend stuff, but if you're involved with something you shouldn't worry about weekends. I feel they should be dedicated to their extra-curricular activities.
