Area artists sweep Country Music Awards

The Johner Brothers of Midale had a highly rewarding time at the 11th Annual Saskatchewan Country Music Awards held from March 3-5 at the Centennial Auditorium at Saskatoon, as did Soo City Blue of Weyburn.

"It was a lot of fun, it's always great to win awards," said Ken Johner. "We've been doing this for awhile, we almost felt like the old guys there. But the awards mean we can keep going with our careers, that we've been rewarded somewhat for the last 15 years in music (12 as Johner Brothers)."

The Johners took most (eight) of the coveted awards, with The Perfect Life winning Album of the Year and Video of the Year, and Still in Love with You winning for Song of the Year. The Johner Brothers won the National Achievement Award for the first time. The award recognizes artists' achievements outside of the province.

Bart McKay and Brad Johner shared kudos for Best Record Producer. Ken Johner was chosen for the All-Star band in the specialty category, as was McKay for keyboard player and studio of the year.

Grant Honig of Soo City Blues was chosen All-Star steel guitar player. The Weyburn band that includes Wayne Honig, Mike Owens, Cleo Coderre and Ron Westman, hit the stage for their first performance at the Centennial Auditorium.

"It was great, although things were a little nervy at times," said Grant Honig. "Performing was a highlight, but it went by so fast."

Soo City Blues was nominated in several categories, making it an eventful weekend. The band greatly appreciated the quality of production and sound at the large venue.
