Comp drama to present two plays

The Weyburn Comprehensive School's drama department will present two one-act plays on Sunday, March 19, and Tuesday, March 21.

The plays are entitled, The Wild Flowering of Chastity, and Ledge, Ledger and Legend. The first play will be taken on to the Saskatchewan Drama Festival in Estevan on March 31. The March 19 performance is at 7 p.m., and the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. on March 21, both in the Cafetorium.

Over the past weekend, the Comp boys basketball team captured the SHSAA 4A Small Cities Championship by defeating Moose Jaw Peacock, the defending champions, in a very close game watched by about 150 fans. Both teams will go onto Hoopla this weekend in Saskatoon, with the Eagles taking on Regina Martin on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The senior girls played Moose Jaw Peacock in the Small Cities Championship in Yorkton, but they came out on the short end of the score and placed second in the province. They will also advance to Hoopla, and will play their first game on Thursday at 6 p.m. versus Regina Winston Knoll.

The annual Grade 9 Student and Parent Night will be held on Monday, March 20, starting at 7 p.m. All future Grade 10 students and their parents are invited to come to the Comp and find out information about subjects and activities at WCS. Many staff members will be on hand to answer questions.

This week is "WCS in the Mall" at Weyburn Square Mall, so drop down all week to see displays from the school's various departments.

The Comp will also be busy with Weyburn Music Festival events in the last week of March, and the Stars of the Festival on Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m. The Saskatchewan Heritage Band will play swing, jazz and dance music on Friday, March 24, starting at 8 p.m., put on by the Weyburn Music Auxiliary.

Saskatchewan Express presented a concert for the student body on Tuesday, along with performances for all of the city's elementary schools.

Over 100 Comp band members will be in Regina on Thursday to participate in the Regina Optimist Band Festival. On Thursday evening, the Weyburn Concert Series will present storyteller James Oliviero in the Cafetorium at 8 p.m.

Ali Naini and Devon Dubnyk finished fourth in the provincial debating competition held in Yorkton over the weekend. Three WCS students, Brandie Sliwka, Tamara Roy and Chantelle Brookes, were part of the Weyburn Senior Girls YBC team that placed second in provincial bowling in Saskatoon on Sunday.
