Nominate an outstanding youth for Jr. Citizen of Year

There is a prime opportunity to recognize an outstanding youth who has made contributions to community and school life, with the provincial Junior Citizen of the Year Award program.

The award is co-sponsored by the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, of which the Weyburn Review is a member, in cooperation with the RCMP, schools and libraries.

The Junior Citizen of the Year Award recognizes outstanding individuals between ages eight and 18 for their positive lifestyles, dedication to community, church and school, and for their strong sense of caring and responsibility. By overcoming challenges in their own life, they inspire others of all ages to accept challenges of their own.

Over 130 individuals have received this award since its inception in 1976, including two recipients from Weyburn. Brent Allin was the first local winner of the award, in 1982, and more recently Vincent Ballenas was named to the award in 1996.

The award is presented to the recipients at a banquet and awards ceremony held in September in conjunction with the annual convention of the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association. This year, the Junior Citizens program will be held on Sept. 22 at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina.

If you know a young person who should be recognized for what they have accomplished and contributed to their community, you can nominate them with forms that will be appearing in the Review over the next couple of months, or you nominate them on-line at www.swna.com or www.saskpower.com.

The deadline for nominations is May 30, 2000.
