New golf fees in place

New greenskeeper at golf club

By PENNY CASTLE, of The Weyburn Review

Golfers at the Weyburn Golf Club will see some changes this year, one being a new greenskeeper.

Lachlan Reeve has taken over the job and brings eight years of experience to the position.

"Lachlan has a good reputation and has been at some good private clubs," said Weyburn Golf Club pro Rod Carroll. "He will being a new look to the course."

Reeve, who is originally from Saskatoon, served as the greenskeeper at the Consort Lakeview Golf Club in Consort, Alta., before his posting in Weyburn. Previous to that, he was the assistant superintendent at the Edmonton Country Club.

During his tenure in Edmonton, Reeve had the chance to prepare the course for a Ladies Professional Golfers Association major tournament, the 1996 Du Maurier Open.

"It was a absolutely amazing to see the amount of work needed for the one-week tournament," said Reeve. "It was a once-in-a-lifetime event for me."

Reeve was attracted to the Weyburn position because he wanted the challenge of working on an 18-hole course again. Consort's course was only nine holes.

The greenskeeper said it is difficult to say what changes will be made until the grass begins to grow. But long-term plans may include increasing the size of the greens on one or two holes.

"I'm just looking at minor tune-ups," said Reeve.

Before Reeve arrived, the Weyburn Golf Club executive decided to renumber the holes to bring a different look to the course. What was formerly the front nine holes is now the back nine holes, while the former Hole 10 is now the starting hole.

The course opened to the public on Friday, making this year one of the earliest starts the club has ever had.

With the early start a new fee schedule for current and new members was announced.

New single adult memberships will cost $475 for the season. For that price, $450 is for the membership to the club while the remaining $25 will be paid out in the form of a range or cart voucher. Renewal memberships will also be sold at $475 until Sunday, April 30. After this date, memberships will be sold at $500.

Couples memberships will be sold for $850, family memberships are $950 while junior memberships are $125.

Green fees remain unchanged at $22 per round of 18 holes. Power carts are also still $22 per round.

A season pass for the range is also available for sale. The costs are $100 for members and $125 for non-members.
