The halls of justice

Some of the staff members of Weyburn's courthouse stand in front of the historic structure, which was announced to be closing at the end of August. The staff include sheriff and registrar Wendy Dammann; deputy sheriff-deputy local registrar Wanda Birnie; provincial court support staff Cheryl Roberts; and caretaker Ron Rogal. Missing is deputy sheriff and deputy local registrar Don Bushell and provincial court clerk Becky Friesen. The courthouse, declared a heritage property in 1988, was first opened in 1929. Weyburn has served as a judicial district since 1913, the year Weyburn became a city.

The first break

A crowd of Creelman residents watches as Eric Loucks breaks on the pool table, during the grand opening of the Creelman Park and Rec. Board's Resource Room on Saturday afternoon in the former Creelman School. The pool table is estimated to be at least 60 years old, formerly located in the old billiards and barber shop on Creelman's main street by Charlie Loucks. The Resource Room includes Loucks' barber chair and mirror, a book exchange, a snack bar plus three computer stations giving public access to the Internet. The pool table's wooden frame and legs and slate are all original, as are the snooker balls on the table; the table was recovered in new felt and new pockets added on.
