A nine-year-old figure skater from Milestone, Megan Keys, is a finalist in an essay contest that may see her end up taking part in a clinic with Elvis Stojko in Toronto in May. Megan entered the essay contest which required skaters to tell about "My most priceless moment in skating." Hers was one of 500 essays received from across Canada, and her entry was selected as one of the three finalists from Saskatchewan. One person from each province will be chosen to take part in the Youth Figure Skating Clinic with Stojko on May 8. The winners will be chosen later this month, and will receive round-trip transportation to Toronto, along with all meals, expenses and accommodations for themselves and a chaperone. In her essay, Megan describes how performing a difficult jump during her program at a competition caused her to forget the rest of her program. "During my warm-up, I did all my spins in my program, and then started my jumps. I did all my singles, which made my coach happy. Next came my axel. I got into position, jumped and landed it. That was the easy part - but could I do it in my program? "I started my program and it went swiftly. Soon I was getting to do my axel. I felt myself jump, pull and land. I did it! I was so excited I came around the corner and completely forgot my program. I thought, 'Oh no! What am I supposed to do?' I looked at the judges and I knew what I had to do. I went over and I talked to the judges, and I started my program where I left off, like a winner. After I got off the ice, I felt horrible because I forgot my program. My coach said that I did great. No one care that I had forgotten my program, and you know they were right." Megan went on to say while she didn't have a perfect program, she achieved the goal she had set for herself, namely jumping and landing her axel move. "It was a great and I still think about it. Who knows, if I keep on working hard, maybe I can make it to the Olympics!," she concluded. |
