About 120 Rotarians and invited guests celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Weyburn at the Elks Hall on Thursday. The Rotary Club of Weyburn received its charter on April 1, 1920, after being sponsored by a club from Moose Jaw. Three years later, the Weyburn club helped the Rotary Club of Estevan by sponsoring its charter. Rotary Club of Weyburn president Grant Marinos said the club has been an active service club geared towards members of the business community and professionals. Over the last 80 years, Rotarians have been involved in the music festival, Polkafest, as well as providing funds for the Tatagwa Parkway. Another unique aspect of the club is that each member is classified according to their employment in the community. Efforts are made not to duplicate occupations, and to get one member from various walks of life. The international body, Rotary International, takes part in developmental projects in the third world, from building water wells for irrigation and drinking to supplying used eyeglasses to visually-impaired people. The Rotary Club's district governor, Peter Peters, was in attendance along with Rotarians from Assiniboia, Regina and Estevan to help the club commemorate its anniversary. In his address, Peters noted Rotary clubs should not be afraid of changing environments and said Rotarians should constantly be setting goals. "If you don't know where you want to go, it does not matter what road you take," said Peters. "Giving an effort is important - 99 per cent of getting where you want to go is through determination." |
