Bike riders to be tested on rules

Young cyclists at city schools will have their knowledge of the rules of the road tested as the city police hold a series of bike roadeos.

The bike roadeos are scheduled to start on Tuesday, May 2, at Assiniboia Park School, followed by Souris School on the morning of May 3, Haig School on May 4 and St. Dominic Savio on May 9.

Officers from the Weyburn Police Service, along with parent volunteers will run each of the events, with a course set up to simulate a street and intersection.

Each rider's bike will be given a mechanical inspection, and if there is any need for something to be fixed, a note will be sent home to the parents, said Const. Garth Oberkirsch.

On the street simulation, the children need to ride according to the rules of the road, including how to signal a turn left, right or to go straight ahead through an intersection, as well as what to do at a stop sign.

The safety campaigns do fairly well in raising awareness with the children, said Const. Oberkirsch, who noted they began educating kids to wear helmets about six years ago, and now helmet usage is very high among school children.

The children are evaluated on how well they ride and, more importantly, how well they know the safety rules. If they don't know the rules, the police and parent volunteers will explain and demonstrate them.
