Once a month the Weyburn Review asks junior high students to offer their comments on a question or issue. This month students at St. Michael Junior High and Weyburn Junior High were asked the following question:
"As a teenager, what major improvement would you like to see in the city of Weyburn?"
Some improvements that I would like to see is more facilities
that deal with teens being able to make decisions and be involved.
- Courtney Sorsdahl, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
As a teenager I would like to see Weyburn have the following
major improvements: better shopping facilities (good stores) and
more places for us to hang out. Also I would like some teen clubs
for on the weekends.
- Kayla Rieger, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
As a teenager, I would like to see a major improvement in funding
for amateur sports. This is something as a rural community I think
we lack. This is the time when we need it the most. For instance,
here in Weyburn, we don't even have a proper outdoor basketball
court.
- Ryan Buchanan, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
As a teenager the major improvement I would like to see in
the city of Weyburn is NO DRUGS.
- Paige Sabados, Gr. 7
St. Michael Junior High
The major improvement I would like to see in my city of Weyburn
is that the streets be clean of pollution, and the people on welfare
can find jobs easier. I would also like to see better stores in
the mall or a bigger mall, at least stores with clothing for teens.
- Renee Sidloski, Gr. 7
St. Michael Junior High
I would like to see in Weyburn a place where teenagers can
hang out and have fun. A place where no drugs or smoking is allowed,
a place where we aren't watched by parents or any other people.
I would also like a smooth area of cement to go rollerblading.
I would also make bike trails for bikers to keep off the highways
and roads and so they are out of trouble.
- Brennen Jones, Gr. 7
St. Michael Junior High
I would like to see more activities for people my age to do,
for example, dances, lazer quests, paintball places, etc. I would
like to see Tatagwa finished, more stores to shop in and a better,
cleaner place for everyone to live.
- Desiree Haider, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
The improvements I would like to see include starting with
the exhibition grounds because they are getting run down. The
ball parks are beautiful but the fair grounds are in pretty rough
shape. Our Colosseum is getting old and is in need of some better
seats. I know that when I first moved here in 1994 I thought the
rink was awful looking inside.
- Jordan Sanders, Gr. 8
St. Michael Junior High
The major improvement I would like to see in Weyburn is maybe
more places that teens can go to so we can hang out with friends.
It would also be good if we could plant more trees and stop littering.
- Tiffany Lanz, Gr. 9

As a teenager, I think the city of Weyburn could use a better
mall because all the good stores leave and there is a bunch of
empty rooms where the stores used to be; all the good stores go
right past Weyburn to other cities. Weyburn could also use a fix-up
at the fair grounds because the grandstand is starting to show
its age and I don't even know how old that is. The Colosseum could
be rebuilt in the same place because we need a new rink. They
should pave the whole fair grounds so it doesn't get muddy when
it rains.
- Richard Mildenberger, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
I would like to see an improvement in the amount of places
for teenagers to go and hang out with friends. All we have is
the youth centre and the mall after school and on Thursday nights.
Lots of people don't want all these teenagers in the mall. I would
like to have a place with pool tables, arcade games, bowling,
floor hockey, basketball, volleyball and a whole bunch of other
activities in one building where there is no drinking or smoking
before or after getting there. I also think it should be for any
age group, not just teenagers.
- Phoebe McFarlane, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
As a teenager, I would love it if Weyburn got better stores
in our mall. We need better clothing for boys. And maybe they
should consider building a new hospital with better equipment
so the patients don't always have to go to Regina all the time.
Get better restaurants and they should consider getting better
summer activities in Weyburn, like bigger and better rides at
the fair. They should also tear down the grandstand because someone
is going to fall through someday and get killed.
- Derek Gibbs, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
As a teenager, a major improvement in the city of Weyburn would
be to give students a chance to get a job at an early age. Like
this summer, I might be taking my bronze medallion in swimming,
and I've been in speed swimming for seven to eight years; if I
had the chance, I could easily get a job at the Leisure Centre.
I know I seem too young, but if I had a chance I could do a very
good job.
- Andrew Fowlow, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
As a teenager I would like to see more free activities open
to kids. There are a lot of kids who would like to be involved
with sports programs, but can't because of the registration fees.
Many kids have a lot of talent, but probably won't be recognized
because they can't participate. Money shouldn't have to be a problem.
Everyone deserves to go out and have a good time playing with
their friends.
- Drina Leippy, Gr. 8
Weyburn Junior High
As a teenager I would like Weyburn to improve the grandstands
at the fair ground. The grandstands are old and decrepit. When
I go to the demolition derby, I feel very unsafe in such an old
rotten structure. There are holes in the floor and only 75 per
cent of the seats are there with peeling paint. When tourists
come to Weyburn for the fair, the grandstands are one of Weyburn's
negatives to them and to me.
