Green exchange to offer bargains, recycling drop off

Intriguing buys or an opportunity to get a return on items no longer needed - that's what the Green Exchange being held at Knox Hall Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., offers residents, with a chance to help themselves and their environment at the same time.

In its second year, the exchange is attracting more donations from the public, according to Weyburn Environment Committee chairperson Debra Button.

"We're doing better with donations than last year, which makes me happy," she said. "We're getting more unique things, like a box spring and mattresses that are in really nice shape. We're getting more feedback from the public and we're doing a lot of picking up (of donated items)."

Table rentals for the sale are about the same as last year, says Button. Those wishing to donate items or rent a table at the event can make arrangements by contacting Button.

The Weyburn Girl Guides Assoc. will be on hand to sell composters. The group will also sell carnations for Mothers' Day at Knox Hall, as well as at the Co-op and Credit Union.

The Green Exchange is held in conjunction with the city Clean-Up Committee, which has again challenged Estevan to compete for the Golden Garbage Can award. Proceeds from the exchange will benefit the South Central Health District Foundation.

Lots of other activities are planned by the Clean-Up Committee in the weeks ahead. City residents were encouraged to take advantage of free drop-off days at the landfill site this past weekend, and another free day will be held on May 27.

Area chairmen will be out inspecting property this week and will report the results at a meeting held Thursday. Property owners who need to make improvements in the appearance of their premises will be informed as soon as possible.

Weyburn Minor Ball members are collecting pledges for Green Day to be held May 20. Weather permitting, the volunteer crew will remove unsightly garbage from public areas of the city.

Elementary school students are participating by drawing posters related to the 'Keep Our Back Lanes Clean' theme. The posters will be submitted on May 12 and displayed at the Weyburn Square Mall from May 23 to 30. Prizes will be awarded in three categories, with the first in each category receiving $30 and the second receiving $20.

With judging dates for early June, the city is making a concerted effort to ensure that the Golden Garbage Can remains in Weyburn for another year.
