Seeding progress at 16%

Farmers in the Weyburn crop district have 16 per cent of this year's crop planted.

According to Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's weekly crop report, area farmers are slightly behind the provincial average of 18 per cent completed, due to some rainfall that stalled seeding operations.

The Weyburn crop district averaged close to 4 millimetres of rain for the week ending May 6, with the RM of Fillmore receiving the most rain at 8 mm.

Despite the rain, strong winds continue to cause soil drifting problems in all areas.

Topsoil moisture conditions in the south deteriorated during the past week, as more than 50 per cent of crop reporters are rating conditions fair to poor. However, pasture conditions are generally rated as fair across the province. Cattle are being moved out to pastures as grazing conditions permit.

Farmers in the southwest part of the province are the furthest advanced in seeding progress, at 42 per cent complete already. Farmers in south central Saskatchewan (Crop District 2b) have made the least progress with 12 per cent of their crop in the ground.

Field peas and chickpeas are at least 50 per cent complete, while lentils, mustard, canola and spring rye are 25 per cent complete. There continues to be a shortage of inoculants for pulse crops.

Fieldwork continues around seeding operations, with weed growth starting to get heavy.
