Silver Seals train for 2000 swim season

The Weyburn Silver Seals Swimming Club has begun practising for the upcoming racing season.

About 70 children and youth between the ages of five and 18 are taking part in the club this year. Organizer Helen Stepp says there is room for more.

Right now the children are being taught all four racing strokes - flystroke, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Instructing the younger age groups are Dustin Satre and Ashley Wirth.

This summer, the Silver Seals are planning on attending meets in Moose Jaw, Estevan, Melville, Regina, and Assiniboia. The southern semifinals will be in Weyburn this year. The top six swimmers in each event and age category at this meet will qualify for the provincial championships in Swift Current.

If interested in joining, children and youth will need a swim suit and a towel. Swim goggles and swimming caps are available.

The club is now practising in the Weyburn Leisure Centre until the outdoor pool is ready for the season sometime in June. All but two of the swim meets this year will be outdoors.
