Entries still needed for Jim Rose Golf Classic

Entries are still being accepted for the seventh annual Jim Rose Memorial Charity Golf Classic.

The tournament, which takes place on Saturday, June 3 at the Weyburn Golf Club, already has about 70 entrants. While the posters advertising the event say there is a limit of 144 golfers and a deadline of Tuesday, May 30, organizer Jack Jones said they would not likely turn any interested golfer away.

Golf is an important part of the event, with the Brian Benning Championship Trophy and a secret prize going to the best golfer at the tournament. But the sport is far from the most important aspect of the tournament.

The money raised by this tournament established a scholarship at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. With the scholarship's financial future now permanently guaranteed, the money raised now is earmarked for the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation.

"The point to this event is to meet old friends, socialize and to have fun," Jones said.

Included in the $40 entry fee is a round of golf, a supper, an evening social, an auction table and door prizes.

A $5,000 hole-in-one prize is offered to the golfers who ace any hole on the course during the tournament. While this prize has never been won, Jones hoped someone would win it this year and even made a prediction who the winner might be.

"I think I'll get it this year," said Jones. "I feel the need for greed."

Jones added if anyone were to take the prize, the event would likely be made more sociable.
