Under the theme Fitness and Fun in the New Millennium, Weyburn's celebration of the SSFA 55 Plus Games will start on Sunday, July 16. Athlete and participant registration will run from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Wheatland Seniors Centre. Later that evening, the opening ceremonies will start at 7:30 p.m. These ceremonies will include a performance from the Johner Brothers and a piper to escort the zone participants into the opening ceremonies. Also included in the ceremony will be a Games Flame, which will be lit at the opening ceremonies and placed at the Wheatland Seniors Centre during the games. Gordon Liddle is also scheduled to participate by singing O Canada. If there is inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Weyburn Comprehensive School gym. Games events in Weyburn will include five-pin bowling at Super Bowl, contract bridge at the Elks Hall, carpet bowling at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, cribbage at the Elks Hall, dance at the Weyburn Legion Hall, darts, floor curling at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, golf at the Weyburn Golf Club, horseshoes at the Wheatland Seniors Centre, kaiser at the Elks Hall, military whist at the Elks Hall, orienteering on the Souris Valley Grounds, poetry or short story writing at the Weyburn Square Mall, scrabble at the Weyburn Comprehensive School, shuffleboard at the Wheatland Seniors Centre, snooker at the Wheatland Seniors Centre, slo-pitch at Jubilee Park, swimming at the Weyburn Leisure Centre, tennis at Jubilee Park and track and field at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. All locations listed are tentative games venues and may be subject to change. Cycling will be this year's demonstration sport. Lawn Bowling will be held in Regina. All events will be completed by Wednesday, July 19. The closing ceremonies will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19 at the Weyburn Curling Club. A choir made up of children from various Weyburn schools and directed by Colleen Weimer will perform. A lunch will follow. As there will be a shortage of hotel space during the games billets will be required for athletes during the games.
