Comp activity awards presented on Tuesday

The activity awards presentations were held in the Weyburn Comprehensive gym on Tuesday morning, with medals and trophies given out for involvement in badminton, basketball, cheerleading, band, choir, cross-country, curling, debating, drama, football, golf, newspaper, soccer, SRC, track, yearbook and volleyball.

The top female athlete was Marla May, the top male athlete was D.J. Gall, and Dustin Satre won the Richard Bethel trophy awarded for athletic skills, leadership and sportsmanship. The Spirit of Youth trophy was given to Jordan Anderson for promoting and leading the student body as well as being involved in many other school activities.

The two retiring teachers, Darlene Andrusiak and Bryan Wilson, were given special Block W awards for their contribution to extra-curricular activities while teaching at the Comp.

The following students were the Block W recipients, accumulating 120 or more points over their three years at the Comp. In athletics, they include Brent Daku, Greg Ekkebus, Krista Sandney, Melina Reich, Michelle Wanner, Marla May, D.J. Gall, Sheena Aitken, Derek Houghton, Trina Delanoy and Stephanie Ernst. In social, the winners were Joanna Kraft, Derek Seitz, Marie Barber, Lise Marcotte and Jordan Anderson.

The comprehensive Block Ws went to Karla Cornish, Katja Wheeler, Dustin Satre and Ian Fleck.

The following medals were awarded in the various sports and activities:

In badminton, Carly Pateman and Frankie Dufour were awarded as outstanding players, and Jody Anderson won the coach's award.

In basketball, D.J. Gall was the boys' MVP and Marla May was the MVP for the girls' squad; Cedric Wilson won the boys' coach's award, Tamara Steer won the girls' coach's award and Trina Delanoy won the most improved player award.

For cheerleading, Amy Leclair won the coach's award, and Ora-Lee Greening was awarded for her dedication and performance.

In band, Michelle Pilon won outstanding woodwind, Dustin Satre for outstanding brass, Ian Fleck for outstanding percussion and Lise Marcotte was named the most valuable player; she also won the outstanding vocalist award for the choir, Carole Beaudry won as best female vocalist and Devon Dubnyk won for best low voice.

In cross-country running, Sharla Clay and Stephen Loden each won the coach's award. In curling, Blaine Weimer was the recipient of the Emil Porth Award, Andrea Becker won the Bob Pettit Memorial Award, and Jennifer Sargent and Shawna Stephanson each won the coach's award.

For debating, Ali Naini and Devon Dubnyk each won the coach's award; in drama, Amy Satre won the Andrea Eckel Award, and Jordan Anderson and Marie Barber each won the director's choice award. Lise Marcotte won the advisor's award for the school newspaper, and Deana Thompson won the Royal Purple Award for the yearbook.

In football, Jerry Trenouth won the Allen Moffat Award, Josh Pulfer won the Al Watson Award, and Richard Roy won the coach's award. Graham DeLaet was given the coach's award for golf.

In soccer, Melina Reich was the MVP and Becky Borshowa won the coach's award.

The SRC awards went to Jordan Anderson, award of excellence; Marie Barber and Alison Mehler, advisor's award; and Stephanie Ernst and Jordan Anderson, the SRC Gavel award.

In track, Ashley Wirth won the coach's award, and Andrew Broccolo won the excellence award.

In volleyball, Sheena Aitken won the Award of Excellence, Ian Fleck was the MVP, Tamara Steer won the coach's award, and Cedric Wilson and Mike Larson each won the undergraduate award.

The last big event coming up this year at the Comp is graduation, to be held on Wednesday, June 28.

Parents and grads are to take part in the decorating of the Curling Rink on Sunday starting at 4 p.m., and all graduates are required to attend the rehearsal on Tuesday, June 27 at 1:15 p.m. They also need to take a change of clothing to the curling rink that afternoon. Caps and gowns will be picked up after rehearsal.

The grad day will start with the class photo at 2:45 p.m. in the Cafetorium, followed by the public punch reception from 3-4:45 p.m. in the school's court yard.

The formal grad ceremonies will take place in the gymnasium starting at 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend, but are reminded that all chairs on the gym floor are reserved for guests and parents.

The barbecue, for invited guests only, takes place at 7:15 p.m. at the Weyburn Curling Rink, followed by a short program at 9 p.m., a dance and the Chem-Free After-Grad party at midnight.
