Weyburn trounces opponents

Blizzards win Zone, advance to Saskatchewan Games

The DQ Blizzards bantam girls fastball team will represent Zone 1 at the 2000 Saskatchewan Games in Yorkton after winning the qualifying tournament at home.

The Blizzards won three straight games, starting with a 20-0 win over White City. Nicole Byrnes shut down their offence, striking out five of the 10 batters she faced. She allowed no runs or hits.

Lynsey MacInnis and Krista Prost hit solo home runs which brought in five of the 20 runs.

Byrnes helped her own cause by hitting two doubles. Jenna Unraw hit an RBI double and two singles. Jamie Gilmore hit one double. Other singles came from Danielle McLeod (two), Megan Leach (two), Stefanie Giroux, Shelly Verbeurgt and Brett Watson.

In Game 2, the Blizzards beat Kennedy-Langbank 8-1. Susan Bobbitt threw five innings, striking out eight, giving up one run on four hits. Watson only needed four pitches to close out the game. MacInnis hit one triple, a double, two RBIs and scored two runs. Prost hit a two-RBI double and one single. Unraw also had an RBI double.

Because of the double-knockout format used at this tournament, the Blizzards faced Kennedy-Langbank team in the tournament's final game. In winning 13-2, Bobbitt fanned six batters in four innings of work. Byrnes pitched the final inning.

Byrnes led her teammates at the plate with five RBIs, one double and two singles. Prost hit her second home run of the day. Unraw added a two-RBI triple. Danielle McLeod contributed a diving catch in left field.

As catcher Megan Leach will already be competing in another Canada Games sport, the Blizzards added a catcher from the Kennedy-Langbank to their roster for the games.

In league play last week, the Blizzards defeated the Regina Royals 7-1 in Weyburn. Bobbitt and Watson combined for eight strikeouts, no walks and three hits. The Royals gave up singles to Prost, McLeod, MacInnis, Byrnes, Unraw, Leach, Biss, Bobbitt and Giroux.

The Blizzards will play in Regina against the Regina Fighting Saints on Thursday.
