Junior Eagles minor football getting set to soar in 2000

When the Weyburn Jr. Eagles hit the gridiron to open the 2000 Regina Minor Football League season in a few weeks time they'll be hoping to keep with their past and stay competitive.

Now in their 11th season, the Jr. Eagles are still doing what they set out to do when they first got underway: Teach Weyburn's up-and-coming athletes the game of football.

"Our goal is to introduce as many children to the game of football as we can," says former Jr. Eagles coach and current Weyburn Minor Football president Wayne Woycik. "That has always been our goal."

Since Woycik has turned his focus to the overall duties as president of Weyburn Minor Football over the past four years, Ted Hillstead has taken over the reins as head coach and will be leading the Jr. Eagles this season, hoping to teach as much about the game as possible.

As the only team outside of Regina to compete in the Regina league, the Jr. Eagles have found themselves on a constant upward climb.

Throughout the season the Jr. Eagles will alternate a schedule of one game in Regina followed the next week by a home game in Weyburn.

Although the Jr. Eagles are slated to open the season August 19, Woycik says there is still room for any interested players as they have 10 to 15 positions they would like to fill by September 1.
