Weyburn golfers were front and centre on Thursday as the Saskatchewan Junior Golf Tour made its way to the Weyburn Golf Club. And two Weyburn golfers were one step further than the rest of the field as Graham DeLaet and Cameron Koski wrapped up both ends of the male side. After opening the tournament with a 39 on the front nine, DeLaet tightened up his game to shoot a 34 on the final nine for a score of 73. Tied with Sean McCarthy of Moosomin after the regulation 18, the tournament was forced to a playoff hole which DeLaet birdied for the win and the championship in the 15-18 division. "I went in hoping to play tough and it was nice to do it," said DeLaet. "I have been struggling with my game (but) it feels good getting a win or two under my belt going into nationals." The win was DeLaet's second straight as he successfully defended his title in the Wascana event in Regina earlier in the week. Weyburn's other golfer to grab the championship at his home course, Koski defeated the 14 and under field with his solid round of 80. In only his second tournament this season, Koski exceeded expectations with a strong follow-up to his second-place finish in a tournament in Humboldt. "It was my best round of the year," said Koski. "It was a shock." Koski, who plays to an average in the mid-80s most rounds, said everything fell into place during the tournament. "My putting was really good and my drives were better then they usually are," said Koski. The win was a close one for Koski who just edged Estevan golfer Tyler Hilkewich by a single stroke. On the girls' side, Shannon McGeady of Regina topped the field with her round of 81. Weyburn's Jenn Dodd finished second with an 86. Other notable Weyburn golfers to turn in solid rounds included Trevor Lebersback, who shot 80 to finish seven strokes off the pace in the 15-18 division. As well in the 14-and-under field, Drew Krainyk hit a solid 89 for a sixth place finish, nine strokes back. The tournament, which began last season, has become a annual event and organizers are looking forward to next summer. |
