Police wants public's help to solve vandalism and break-ins

The Weyburn Police Service is asking for the public's help in their investigation of a pair of acts of vandalism at a city church recently, along with investigations by the RCMP into a number of recent break-ins and an incident of an assault of two men in Hardy.

The first incidence of vandalism occurred on July 29, when a large rock and a piece of cement were used to break windows in five automobiles parked on the property of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Later an exterior door light for the church was broken on Aug. 5.

City police are also investigating a break-in on Aug. 4 at Fit 4 U at the Elgin Mall, in which a stereo phone and Rialto mountain bike were stolen.

Weyburn RCMP are looking into a second break-in incident at the Weyburn Golf Club over the weekend, in which six club members' golf carts were taken out for joy rides around the course. Many of these carts were heavily damaged along with some of the greens. The carts were in a storage shed, and were taken out sometime on Friday night.

Radville RCMP are continuing their investigation into an assault of two men in Hardy on July 9. Police responded to the call in the hamlet, located 30 km west of Radville, and found a 47-year-old male and a 50-year-old male injured. Police say they had been beaten by assailants with baseball bats in their home.

Both men were treated at Radville Marian Health Centre. The 50-year-old was released with minor injuries, and the 47-year-old was taken for further treatment at Regina General Hospital. No arrests have been made in this incident.

Weyburn RCMP are investigating a number of break-ins, including one at the farm residence of Vern Maurer, located between Goodwater and Weyburn, which was broken into sometime between July 4 and 17. Some guns and food were stolen.

A Midale resident, Russ Scharnatta, had two gas tanks stolen from a boat parked in his yard sometime between July 24 and Aug. 2.

Some gas was stolen from bulk tanks on the Kevin Schultz farm located northeast of Trossachs sometime between Aug. 10 and 11. The same night, some signs at the cafe and playground area at Nickle Lake Regional Park were knocked down.

Some items were stolen from a car parked at the Don Pulfer farm east of McTaggart overnight Aug. 5-6, including a CD wallet and numerous CDs.

The Midale Beauty Salon on Main Street was broken into sometime overnight on July 12-13. Some cash and other items were stolen.

Earlier, the TPMS Lunch Bar on Midale's Main Street had a break-in overnight on July 2-3, and some pop was stolen.

Anyone with information on any of the above offences can contact their local RCMP, the Weyburn city police or can call anonymously to the Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers tips line at 1-800-222-8477. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for these or any serious offence. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display, and calls are not recorded or traced.

The RCMP was called to a collision between a grain truck and an extended-cab pickup truck on July 13 at the intersection of grid road 606 and the Goodwater grid road three miles north of Midale

The grain truck, driven by Russell Casler of Midale, went through a yield sign and collided with the pickup driven by Keith Wilvers of Halbrite. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. Wilvers was taken to Midale and then Weyburn General Hospital for treatment and was released. Casler was charged with failing to yield at a yield sign.

Subsequently, the RCMP and RM of Cymri have announced that the RM will change all yield signs in the RM to stop signs, in the hopes of preventing collisions.
