With the 2000 Saskatchewan Summer Games behind them, members of the Weyburn Silver Seals Speed Swimming Club were up for another challenge as they took to the water again for the season-ending 2000 Saskatchewan Summer Swimming Provincial Finals. With 21 swimmers representing Weyburn at the Swift Current meet, the Silver Seals ended the season on a high note as each of their swimmers managed to pull in a medal. At the top of the list, just like at the Summer Games, was 18-year-old competitor/coach Dustin Satre who once again dominated his field. Satre, who collected gold medals in the 50, 100 and the 200-metre freestyle, as well as the 200 m individual medley, said his times weren't as good as his Summer Games performances but good enough to win. "It feels great every time you win," said Satre. "(But) it wasn't quite the Summer Games." Satre, who also picked up a silver in the 100 m butterfly, said although he was geared up for the recent meet, having the Summer Games in the same season seemed to take something away from the Provincial meet's importance. Along with the four-gold medal haul by Satre, the Silver Seals also had a recording-breaking performance as nine-year-old Claudia Lenferna turned in a time of 19.53 seconds in the 25 m butterfly, capturing the gold along the way. Lenferna, who has been competitively swimming for three years, added to her record-breaking performance with silver medals in the 25 m breaststroke, the 25 m freestyle and the 100 m individual medley. Lenferna rounded out her outstanding day in the pool with a bronze medal in the 25 m backstroke. Silver Seals head coach Dustie Steeves was ecstatic with Lenferna's performance but didn't want to take anything away from the rest of the team. "She had an excellent (performance)," said Steeves. "I was satisfied with all of our swimmers, everyone (came away) with a medal. I was very happy with the way our swimmers handled themselves, a lot of our swimmers had personal bests." Rounding out the Weyburn contingent of swimmers was Kayla Andrews, Lauren Cook, Michelle Corrigan, Karli Gammack, Brandon Hoffman, Lane Krainyk, Taylor Hoffman, Trina Langedahl, Pierre Lenferna, Brian Lunde, Mallory Mazer, Britany Melanson, Kyle Paterson, Jason Stepp, Reid Paterson, Skyelar Verbeurgt, Brody Ward, Taylor Verbeurgt and Lawren Ward. |
