A new play structure put up by the Young Fellows Club at the Don Mitchell Tot Lot will be dedicated to the memory of former club member Brian Benning on Saturday, Sept. 2. "It was a club suggestion to dedicate this to him when it was decided that we had to replace some of the play struccollegtures," said past president and club member Scott Paxman. "Brian was a good leader in this community and well-respected. We just wanted to honour him in some way," he said. The club members will provide hot dogs and pop at the location from 3 to 5 p.m., with the dedication to take place at 4 p.m. The refreshments will be available for a loonie donation. The structure was installed this past summer as a replacement for play equipment that was deemed unsafe under new CSA safety guidelines. The new play structure has some climbing and sliding equipment on it, and is located near the paddling pool at the Mitchell Tot Lot on Coteau Avenue, across from Haig School. The club will have a plaque mounted on a rock near the new play structure, with the dedication to Benning as someone "who cared deeply for his family, friends and community." The Young Fellows spent $15,000 for this new play structure, and plan on replacing the equipment on the other side of the playground next year. |
