Scholarships, awards presented:
Comp graduates reap awards of $164,000

The top academic achievements of the Weyburn Comprehensive School's Class of 2000 were rewarded on Thursday evening at the annual awards night, with scholarships and bursaries worth a potential total of $164,000.

The top academic achiever was last year's class valedictorian, Ian Fleck, who was awarded the Governor General's Award and the Andy Tuttle Scholarship for having an average of 96.4 per cent.

Principal Ken Larson told the crowd the calculators were put to work for this award, with the runner-up only .13 per cent behind Fleck.

Fleck also received a University of Saskatchewan platinum award of $2,500, a Weyburn Rotary Club Scholarship of $1,500, the Valedictorian Award from Reader's Digest, a Knights of Columbus Scholarship of $1,000, a Government of Saskatchewan General Proficiency Award, the English subject medal and runner-up for the Science subject medal, and the T.C. Douglas Medal for males.

The female winner of the T.C. Douglas Medal was Sheena Aitken, who also won a Rotary Club Scholarship for $1,500, the U.R. Scholar Award worth a potential $14,000 (as it pays her yearly tuition fees at the University of Regina for four years, worth at least $3,500 per year), a Government of Saskatchewan General Proficiency Award and the Social Studies subject medal.

The R.C. Smith General Proficiency Award and the Dawn Beach Memorial Scholarship were awarded to Jordan Anderson, as he had an 83 per cent average and accumulated 112 extracurricular points. He was also awarded a Weyburn Comp Coca-Cola Award for $500.

Dustin Satre won the PanCanadian Excellence in Science Award for $1,000, the Elgin School Matthew Hall Memorial Bursary, a Weyburn Kinsmen Club Scholarship for $250, the Williams/Wilson Scholarship for $400, a University of Saskatchewan platinum award of $2,500, a Government of Saskatchewan Proficiency Award, the Science subject medal and runner-up to the English subject medal, as well as runner-up to the T.C. Douglas Medal.

Michelle Pilon was awarded the PanCanadian Student of the Year Award for $1,000, the Royal Canadian Ladies Auxiliary Bursary of $500 in the first year and $300 in succeeding years, the Beta Sigma Phi XiXi Bursary of $200, the Weyburn Teachers' Association Scholarship for $500, the French subject medal and runner-up to the music subject medal.

The Tom Zandee Humanitarian Award was presented to Kelly-Ann McLeod, for her extensive volunteer work with the Girl Guides and as a board member of the Family Place.

She was also presented with a Government of Saskatchewan General Proficiency Award, a Weyburn Co-op Association Scholarship for $500, the Weyburn Credit Union's R.S. Williamson Scholarship of $1,000, the University Women's Club French Award and the Business Education subject medal.

Greg Ekkebus was awarded the Jim Rose Memorial Bursary of $1,000, the El Rancho Bursary of $2,000, the DeVry Scholarship, the Computer Science subject medal, and runner-up for the Business Education and Math subject medals.

In the math contest, medals were awarded to Stephen Loden in Grade 10, Phil Jones for Gr. 11 and Jonathan Schultz for Gr. 12. Certificates of Distinction were given to Stephen Loden for Gr. 10; Phil Jones, Samantha Salisbury, Adam O'Dell, Rebecca Borshowa and Andrew Loden for Gr. 11 and Jonathan Schultz for Gr. 12; a team certificate was awarded to Derek Bjorndalen, Greg Ekkebus and Jonathan Schultz.

The Grade 10 academic proficiency award went to Blaine Weimer, with runner-up Shumita Roy; the Gr. 11 academic proficiency award was presented to Danielle Sproule, with Michael Larson as the runner-up. Larson was also presented with the one-time Governor General Canadian History Medal for the Millennium.

In the other subject medals, Stephen Barry won the accounting medal; Jessica Telford for art; Jennifer Ashworth for cosmetology; Amy Lonoway for home economics; Derek Bjorndalen for math; Lise Marcotte for music; Stephanie Ernst for Phys. Ed.; and Jesse Szczecinski for Tech/Vocational.

The winner of the University Women's Club Art Award was Rafal Polujanski, who was also the runner-up for the art subject medal.

Winners of the Catholic Women's League Bursary for $200 each was Lise Marcotte and Derek Seitz. The Country Women's Association Scholarship of $300 each went to Jeff Clay and Krista Goranson; the Elks Lodge Bursary went to Burton Jones.

The Masonic Lodge Bursary of $250 went to Marla May, who was also presented with the Order of the Royal Purple Bursary for $200, the Royal Canadian Legion Scholarship of $1,000, the Weyburn Inland Terminal Scholarship of $350 and a Government of Saskatchewan General Proficiency Award.

The Laura and George Hall Memorial Bursary of $1,000 went to Melanie Fish.

The Family Place Bursary was presented to Amy Lonoway, and the McCoy-Pharmasave Bursary for $500 was awarded to Holly Power.

The Odd Fellow/Rebekah Bursary for $300 was awarded to Katja Wheeler, who also won a Royal Canadian Legion Scholarship of $1,000, the second R.S. Williamson Scholarship of $1,000 and the Weyburn Fire Brigade Scholarship.

The South Central Health District chapter of the SRNA awarded their bursaries to Dana Fahlman and Karen Wormsbecker, and the second winner of the Legion Ladies Aux. Bursary of $500 was Derek Seitz. Dana also won the second Coca-Cola Award of $500.

The Weyburn Community Bingo Bursary of $500 went to Leah Kot, and Weyburn Comp Xerox Award of $500 was presented to Joanna Kraft. The second Co-op Association Scholarship of $500 went to Kimberley Stadel, who also won one of two bursaries from Weyburn Police Service for $500. The other police association bursary went to Tamara Roy.

The Weyburn Young Fellows Don Murray Memorial Bursary for $1,000 went to Jason Kopeck.

The University of Alberta Entrance Scholarship for $3,000 was awarded to Krista Sandney, and the Hal Rogers Kinsmen and Kinettes Bursary for $1,000 was presented to Lise Marcotte.

Derek Bjorndalen is in military training at Kingston, Ont., and won the ROTP scholarship, which will pay his university tuition. He was also presented with the Government of Saskatchewan General Proficiency Award, along with Kim Stadel.
