Farmers Market provides home-grown atmosphere

It's a typical Saturday morning at the Weyburn Farmers Market, and local residents looking for fresh produce and homemade goods file in and out of the large building at 135 Second St. N.E.

Long tables are filled with colourful, garden-ripe vegetables, fragrant, golden pies and buns, attractive crafts, and a wide array of other items, available through the efforts of local gardeners, bakers and artisans.

It's this relaxed and homespun atmosphere that keeps people flowing through the Farmers Market on a regular basis, says Weyburn president Yvonne Paulhus-Kittleson.

"It's a rural, home-grown, country type of market - it has to do with the farm and rural living," she said, noting 150 people had already been through the door and the market had only been open an hour.

The local non-profit organization is part of a provincial association that includes around 60 farmers markets throughout Saskatchewan. Weyburn's, which has been run out of several locations through the years, continues to be a popular spot - even more so now that it's located downtown, and easily accessible to seniors, Paulhus-Kittleson says.

She says people are also drawn to the Farmer's Market because the vendors bring in top-quality goods.

"We're always looking for more vendors, and the ones who are here really like this building, because it's clean, there are washrooms, and it's ideal for people walking downtown."

Recently the provincial association opened the markets up to those who want to sell product lines through home-based businesses, which Paulhus-Kittleson expects should draw more vendors.

There are two seasons for Weyburn's market. The spring/summer season begins the second week of May, and features bedding and house plants, fresh garden vegetables and fruit among the regular items, available until after Thanksgiving weekend. It opens again in late November, early December for the Christmas season, featuring holiday-appropriate baking, chocolates, crafts, toys and other gift ideas. After Christmas the market closes again for the spring.

During these seasons, the Weyburn Farmers Market is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday.
