A group of pro-life activists attracted a lot of second looks when they set up a number of graphic signs at one of Weyburn's busiest corners, Government Road and First Avenue, during a high-traffic time of day on Thursday. Led by Bill Whatcott of Regina, the members of Christian Truth Activists had both honks of support and upset motorists stopping to complain about the graphic nature of the some of the posters. Some posters depicted a healthy baby, while others showed the bloodied remains of aborted fetuses. Whatcott and his wife, Elizabeth, and director Diane Richards manned the signs along with Lydia Monastersky and Beatrice Sidloski to answer questions and hand out literature. Whatcott said they were on a six-community tour on Thursday and Friday with the signs, as they were in Swift Current, Moose Jaw and a radio open-line show prior to coming to Weyburn. John Sidloski of the Weyburn Pro-Life Association dropped by to lend his support, although the group's visit was independent of the Weyburn association. Asked what reaction he's seen to the graphic pictures, Whatcott replied, "We get both, a lot of people on both sides of the issues. Some have threatened to call the police or they try to destroy our signs." While setting up his signs, many people could be seen taking a look at the pictures, and one young person yelled, "Take them down!" as they drove by. Two city police officers showed up to find out if the activists had permission to be on the corner. Whatcott explained he would make sure their protest remained on the public sidewalk, and that they would be gone by 5:30 p.m. Whatcott admitted the pictures were disturbing. "Sometimes the truth hurts. We're trying to expose an atrocity that's very well-hidden." When asked what effect such pictures might have on children, Whatcott pointed to the 4,000 homocides per year on television that children were exposed to "for gratuitous purposes." The group Christian Truth Activists has been across Canada and the U.S. with their protests, and in mid-August they were in Mexico for 10 days. After blockading an abortion clinic in Merida, authorities tried to have them deported out of the country but were unsuccessful. Whatcott has been showing pictures like these since 1995. |
